The purpose of this study is to improve the shrinkage cavities ( shrinkage and microporosity ) volume of distal femoral and hip bipolar in the process of precision casting. The casting gating and riser design in distal femoral are defined by two kinds of runner system (rectangular and square) and in hip bipolar is just defined by one kind of runner system (rectangular). This study simulates the distal femoral and hip bipolar by Finite Difference Method. Then, using four factors ( casting temperature, pouring time, shell thickness and shell temperature ) to optimize the shrinkage volume of femoral and bipolar by Taguchi method and to discuss the differences between the simulation and experience results. Based on the results of simulation, it is shown that the shrinkage of the casting could be reduced by increasing the shell temperature and the shell thickness. The shrinkage occurred rate were reduced from 30% to 98% depend on the different shape of casting that compare with the original parameters. Also, after twice Taguchi method can found the optimum parameters for reduce the shrinkage and microporosity much more. The accuracy of simulation was validated by the experiment.
