The number of online newspapers is dramatically increasing, and changes from printed newspapers to online newspapers involve not only the medium but also the text. However, a lot of research has been done to investigate the frames applied to political issues in newspapers, but not as much as to North Korea’s agendas. The objective of this study is to examine the news coverage of North Korea to investigate and compare the frames that news agencies in different countries use so as to understand to what extent news reports on North Korea vary among countries. The study attempts to answer the following questions: (1) What are the news sources used in the newspapers in Taiwan, the U.S., South Korea, and China in reporting on four selected events? (2) What specific points of view are revealed by examining the frames of news events relating to North Korea adopted by news organizations in the U.S., South Korea, China, and Taiwan? (3) Does the use of frames vary significantly in reporting on four selected events across news organizations in the U.S., South Korea, China, and Taiwan? This study performs content analysis on 412 articles from the following news media: Taipei Times from Taiwan, The New York Times from America, Korea JoongAng Daily from South Korea, and China Daily from China. Adopted five categories of frames that had been originally proposed by Semetko and Valkenburg (2000) were developed by Yang and Ishak (2012). The results suggested that the usage of frames differed among news organizations and across four news events.
