According to World Tourism Organization ( UNWTO, 2010), the number of international tourists reaches to annual growth rate 7% and comes to a new record 9.4 billion, which set a brand new stage for low cost carriers (LCC). Until the end of July, 2014, there are already sixty seven LCCs in Asia Pacific Area, among them thirteen have entered Taiwan market.
On the contrary to traditional full-service airlines, LCCs focus on limited services, flexibility and price advantages and become the most prosperous business model in the airline industry. However, competition among LCCs is also tough; therefore, selection of new destination point is a crucial factor for the survival of LCCs.
From literature review the research identified four categories and 20 evaluation criteria when LCCs is surveying new destination points. By adopting AHP, the relative weights of the 20 criteria were calculated. The results show that, when LCCs is surveying new destination point, the most two critical dimensions are “competitive advantages of new destination city” and “infrastructure of destination airport and flight fleet”. Finally managerial implications are discussed and future research topics are proposed.
