With preservation of cultural heritage having been highlighted worldwide nowadays, family quarters in Taiwan are taken as cultural legacies not only due to their unique cultural traits drawn from contemporary history, but also their representativeness for a space of the past five decades within living memory of the people. However, it has to be acknowledged that, with concrete building and physical environments taking modern shapes, this unique form of settlement has nearly, if not all, faded into the mushrooming geographies in Taiwan. Five-decade-old culture of family quarters, in other words, has been de-structured as time goes by. Given this unavoidable trend, what could be the potentials to be exploited from the perspective of cultural preservation? To address this timely concern, this paper took a case study into Zizil Village—one of family quarters in Taoyuan Country, North Taiwan. It sought to understand contents and features of cultural properties, tangible and intangible, of the family quarters in Taiwan, and to explore transformations of the culture proper ever since remodeling of these settlements. Methodologically, a field survey and in-depth interviews were taken. The paper eventually found that, firstly, gone are the days when settlers in those family quarters shared a particular set of occupational background and distant memory. Secondly, as this paper argued, it was impractical to conserve family quarters either by continuing with them at their original sites or by shaping the same environments as they used to be. This paper in the end suggested that effort to preserve family quarters could be made via public displays, cultural exchanges and functional diversification. 碩士 === 開南大學 === 觀光運輸學院碩士在職專班 === 103 === Abstract
Family quarters in Taiwan refer to clusters of settlement for military dependents that were evacuated from mainland China after 1949.
