Summary: | 碩士 === 高雄醫學大學 === 護理學系碩士班 === 103 === The purposes of this study were to examine the status of resourcefulness and information seeking in families of patients at ICU and to explore the correlations between resourcefulness and information seeking. This study employed a cross-sectional, correlational design with a convenience sample of 100 families of patients in ICUs of a regional teaching hospital located in southern Taiwan. Three structured questionnaires including “Demographics”, the “Information Seeking Scale,” and the “Resourcefulness Scale” were used to collect data. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regressions were performed for data analysis.
The results showed that the mean score of resourcefulness level was 99.66 (SD = 14.03, IS = 71.17), referring to the moderate level of resourcefulness in families of patients at ICU. The mean score of information needs of the subjects was 39.28 (SD = 4.98, IS = 89.27), indicating high level of information needs; the mean score of information seeking frequency was 15.89 (SD = 4.76, IS = 52.97), indicating the low to medium level of information seeking frequency in families of patients at ICU. In addition, the resourcefulness level was significantly and positively correlated with both information needs (r = .25, p < .05) and information seeking frequency (r = .34, p < .01); Personal resourcefulness was also significantly and positively correlated with both information needs (r = .35, p < .01) and information seeking frequency (r = .32, p < .01); however, social resourcefulness did not significantly correlated to information needs, but was significantly and positively correlated with information seeking frequency (r = .30, p < .01). Moreover, resourcefulness was an important predictor of information seeking frequency in this sample (β = .34, t = 3.54, p < .01), accounting for 10% of the variance. The study findings serve as a reference for the health professional authorities in developing effective resourcefulness-related interventions and in helping the family members of ICU patients improve resourcefulness and reinforce information seeking behaviors, thereby alleviating their anxiety and uncertainty while waiting outside of the ICU.
