Metals, lipids, and proteins are important biological and physiological components in organisms. Abnormal distributions of these analytes are disease factors and markers. Mass spectrometry (MS) can detect these analytes because of its high sensitivity, but different instrumentations are used to analyze inorganic metals and organic biomolecules. Using one analytical platform will make inorganic and organic MS analysis more simple and convenient. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) was used to detect metals in real samples and to image tissues. Chelating agents were used to bind and ionize metals in food, drug, and water samples. This new technique successfully uses one analytical platform to analyze inorganic and organic analytes, also enabling a holistic understanding of tissues for clinical diagnosis. As the analysis of intact metal solids has not been performed using ambient MS, a technique known as electrospray laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (ELDI/MS) was used to characterize metal solids without pretreatment. Metals in solid aluminum, copper, nickel, and lead samples were detected, as well as those in coins. Yeou-Lih Huang 黃友利 2015 學位論文 ; thesis 118 en_US
