The book titled “Fengshen Yanyi” presents the beauty of rhetoric as a novel, with the uniquely created artistic language. This thesis mainly studies the rhetoric of “Fengshen Yanyi” and utilizes comparison, which is often used in the book and has stronger rhetorical effectiveness, to analyze the beauty of its words.The paper analyzes the book from two categories, ideographic method and ideographic content. It first investigates the author and writing background of “Fengshen Yanyi”, and then discusses rhetorics, using applicable examples in “Fengshen Yanyi” to explore the use of rhetorics.
The findings of the thesis are as follows: 1. The use of rhetoric in “Fengshen Yanyi” is everywhere: the author uses comparative techniques for all poems, songs, hymns, and couplets to add beauty to the words and make the thoughts more obvious. 2. The tenors and vehicles described in the rhetoric of “Fengshen Yanyi” are changeable and interesting: it is found in the ideographic content of the rhetoric that the sun, moon, stars, wind, rain, thunder, lightening, birds, animals, flowers, weeds, trees, and life are good comparisons to vehicles. “Fengshen Yanyi” is good at utilizing these vehicles to describe people, affairs, things, scenes, and such, to make tenors closer to the readers’ life experience and reveal the hidden thoughts and feelings in words and their implied meanings.
3. The interactive applications between rhetoric and various other rhetorical methods make the text distinctive and vivid: the thesis itemizes rhetorics into the basic type, changeable type, and other rhetorical intersections, in order to understand the ingenuity of words in “Fengshen Yanyi”. Whether it’s a common sentence, poem, song, or praise, the literary skills and artistic value can be found in “Fengshen Yanyi”.
