Summary: | 碩士 === 玄奘大學 === 視覺傳達設計學系碩士班 === 103 === Ang Lee won the 85th Oscar of best director and other four awards as ‘Life of Pi’. The movie drew many cinephiles’ attention to discussion significantly since released, especially for its open ending and symbolic links.
The purpose of this study is to interpret how Ang Lee used different shots to tell and connect two perspectives(the story of a young man survives a disaster at sea with animals verses with his mother and other passengers) as one story, as well as how audiences understood he’s intention of applying metaphors to the story.
This study analyzes and explicates the implicative multi-meanings, symbols and views of the shots from different perspectives. Moreover, it conducts rationality tests with audiences by asking Likert 7 points and multivariate analysis with Excel.
On one hand, by analyzing the shots, this study reveals different layers of multi-meaning. On the other hand, the rationality test shows that testees who’s experienced in film editing and producing recognize better than other testees from the implication of what Ang Lee trying to convey in the movie. As to the testees who have no experience in film editing and producing, they think the story of surviving from a shipwreck with animals are more reasonable than with other passengers. As a result, it reveals the value of applying metaphors to moral movies, which might just be the reason of why Ang Lee used interesting multi-meaning symbolic links and got success.
