On-line questionnaires were filled out by 485 Taiwanese participants of 20-64 years old. All participants were first classified as either the high social anxiety group or the normal group. For the 257 participants in the high social anxiety group, a clustering analysis of the interpersonal values scores was conducted. In this high social anxiety group, three clusters of different interpersonal values were formed and the interpersonal strength differences of there three clusters were compared. The same analyses were conducted for the normal group. Three categories of interpersonal styles were identified, (a) the agentic–communal, (b) the separate, and (c) the submissive-communal. The results are as follows. (1) Individuals of high social anxiety seem to have different interpersonal values and interpersonal strengths. (2) The above-mentioned interpersonal values and strengths have significant differences. (3) The high social anxiety group and the normal group showed significantly different interpersonal values and interpersonal strengths. These findings indicate that individuals with high social anxiety have qualitatively different interpersonal characteristics than the normal group. The interpersonal circumplex provides a good framework to carefully examine interpersonal characteristics among individuals with or without social anxiety for future researchers and practical psychologists.
