Claude Lévi-Strauss in his book“The Raw and the Cooked” mentioned that “Raw” represents the Savage and “Cooked” represents the Civilization. However, in Hakka culture the funeral three offerings, the raw food represents the highestof sacrifice etiquette and the cooked food means the continuously emotional linkage to the dead. Thus, they have differently meanings in between. In Hakka funeral three offerings, the raw food represents the most noble of belief links to the Gods and the Cooked food in funeral offerings means the most directly and continuously emotional linkage to the dead. In Hakka funeral, the meaning of three offerings about the raw and cooked food is totally different from Claude Lévi-Strauss’ savage and civilization.
In Hakka area, raw food and cooked food offerings depend on the level of the God. Whole pigs and sheep as a sacrifice in today's society and a lot of religions have disagreed with bloody sacrifices because of the poor perception!
As one of Hakka family members, growing up within this environment, I think this is part of Hakka culture and considered naturally. Judging the culture is good or bad, custom is poor or not should from nation’s internal culture to do the assessment because the custom exists would have its own reasons. Hakka custom has many Confucian thoughts. We can say that Hakka group is the one who inherits and performs Confucian thoughts most.
This paper starts from Hakka funeral three offerings, raw offerings to heaven God represents the linkage to the God with highest of respect and pray God to listen directly and protect posterity. On the other side, the cooked vegetarian sacrifice for the dead. From funeral day one until the day of a year, the different funeral offerings with varies meaning which also presents the difference of offerings changes the sadness and is worth doing further studies. In addition to investigate the origin of Hakka three offerings, it also categorized the God in general Hakka temple worship to differentiate from the worship of the dead. In this paper also discusses how the families of the dead continue the linkage with the dead by the food. By introducing food linkage with the dead to transfer sad emotions, it may also achieve the counseling effects for the sadness.
