Summary: | 碩士 === 玄奘大學 === 應用外語學系碩士班 === 103 === With technology growing rapidly, English teaching materials in the market tend to link with news and current affairs (be situational) and display with multimedia. Thus, this study aims at comparing the learning effects of situational English teaching materials and traditional teaching materials, besides, suggesting the possible improvements for multimedia developing of situational English teaching materials.
The experimental objects are the adult learners of TOEIC certification institute in Taipei who passed the simulated tests and aim at reachigng the scores of 750 in TOEIC. The experiment concludes two groups:there are 27 adult learners in the experimental group and another 27 in the comparable group. During the experimental 6 weeks, 《CNN Interactive Magazine》is used as the experimental materal in the experimental group, meanwhile, the original materals of the TOEIC Institue are used in the comparable group. Before and after the experimental program, the researcher conducts the tests in both groups and then passes out the survey of “teaching materials satisfaction” in the experimental group. The effective rate is 77.78% based on the sample of 27 research objects in the experimental group. In addition, the researcher performs “focusing group interviewing” in the 5 learners who are willing to participate in the reseach. Accoding to the results of the survey and the interviewing, the researcher would compare experimental teaching materialsand the original teaching materials regarding vocabulary, listening ability, sentence patterns and pronounciation.
This study obtains the following points: Firstly, in vocabulary, traditional materials perform better which could extend more words. Secondly, in listening ability, experimental materials display better, however, they should weight more trainings on “liaison” and discrimination of “different accounts”. Thirdly, in sentence patterns, experimental materials are more interesting, however, traditional materials are more functional in English tests. Fourthly, in pronouciation, experimental materials could stimulate the learners’ organs of pronounciation, nevertheless, the researcher would suggest experimental materials develop the softwares and hardwares of correcting the learners’ pronounciation.
Hence, digital situational English teaching materials could elevate the learning motives, however, there are still some improvements in designs of multimedia in situational materails.
