This paper consists of six chapters. It starts with the introduction of logotherapy in terms of its background, theories, contributions and impacts, and then discusses Qiao’s sufferings in life and the link between the three ways to gain meaning, creative values, experiential values and attitudinal values, which are stressed by logotherapy. This paper’s research is based on Qiao’s sorrows caused by his character, love affairs and the search for his biological parents. The study found that Qiao, though suffered for his heroic, chivalrous and unconstrained character and uncompromising toughness, actively quested for meaning with a strong will and realized the creative values so as to ultimately achieve self-transcendence through forgiveness and mercy. In terms of love affairs, though killing Aju by mistake and losing his loved one, he was healed with love and forgiveness and finally demonstrated the meaning of life and realized the experiential values. Lastly, tortured by his love affairs with women later found to be his half-sisters, he displayed the freedom of will through the search for his real parents. Once caught in the contradictions of nationalism and the conflicts between the Song and Liao dynasties, he at last transcended nationalism and turned into a unique individual being with mercy and the well-being of the public in mind. He finally realized the attitudinal values and achieved the ultimate meaning of life by self-sacrificing. This paper tries to summarize and analyze the rough and traumatic life of Qiao Feng, the protagonist of the novel “the Dragon Chronicles,” and explore the link between his trauma and life meaning to achieve transcendence with his self-sacrifice by examining his life in phases through Viktor Frankl’s three basic principles of logotherapy, the freedom of will, the will to meaning and the meaning of life.
