For more than 20 years, many Taiwanese businesses have used Mainland China as their factory to become world-leading firms in their industries. With lean production models and proper control of management and operating costs, these businesses, mostly in the information technology industry, have created an advantageous barrier for themselves that is hard to cross for competitors. By comparison, the service industry in Taiwan has shown a very limited growth due to government policies. With the change of population structure and development of various applications mobile Internet technology, the service industry has had a greater demand for manpower and an increasing production value. Therefore, this study focuses on applications of ERP in the service industry and examines whether the 30 some year ERP management experience of the manufacturing industry can be directly applied to management of the service industry.
The objective of this study is to investigate how the service industry can make use of the ERP experience accumulated over the years by the manufacturing industry in daily management of its operations. First of all, this study reviews literature related to cost management and customer relationship management in ERP. Later, this study examines how to apply ERP production theories and methods in service-based industries and finds the maximum effectiveness in use of resources and production through action research. Finally, the implementation results are analyzed.
This study offers an alternative perspective on application of ERP systems to domestic service industries. The proposed applications can also be used as a ERP implementation solution for ERP consulting firms.
