In order to seek a breakthrough, the author decided doing research in searching potential ways for further development in professional illustration career. From years of “quasi-professional illustrator” experience, the author noticed that many famous illustrators obtained unique and artistic techniques, which created splendid illustration style with visual ingenuity. Yet, many illustrators committed themselves in creating narrative storybooks, explanatory illustrations, or illustrations that depicting words, consequently, the non-narrative, non-explanatory and wordless picture books are much less published.These inspired the author creating this graduation work. There were three main purposes of this study: 1 To study Jamsan’s "Sleeping Mountain" series in order to figure out his methods and procedures in creating illustration. 2. To analyze Mitsumasa Anno's "Journey of the picture book, the Danish" in order to discover his strategies and approaches in creating illustration. 3. To create "The euphoriland", a wordless and non-narrative picture book. This work applied author’s research conclusion as well as in using author’s unique graffiti illustration style. It also synthesized author’s privious experience and research materials. Most importantly, it provided alternative possibilities for self-training illustrators to achieve professional prospect. In this study, the main research approaches are as followings: 1. Two case studies, Jamsan’s "Sleeping Mountain" series and Mitsumasa Anno's "Journey of the picture book, the Danish", including critical analysis of Jamsan’s and Mitsumasa Anno’s illustration artworks. 2. Exploration and study in wordless picture books, visual perception and identify patterns, popular culture and collective memory, and the stage director instruction. 3. Synthesize research outcomes from the above two aspects on final work “The euphoriland". Chapter 1 explained research motivation, the purposes, the methods and the frame works of this study. Chapter 2 was the review and discussions of the literature, including wordless picture books, visual perception and identify patterns, popular culture and collective memory, and the stage director instruction. Chapter 3 analyzed the creation procedures and methods of Jamsan’s "Sleeping Mountains" series and visual perception application in Mitsumasa Anno's "Journey of the picture book, the Danish". Jamsan’s success formula was firstly developing major character , then creating surroundings for this character. Mitsumasa used well-known fairy tale’s characters in his illustrations, which not only challenging reader’s memory but also fulfilling reading pleasure. Apart from the above analysis, this chapter discussed the procedure of forming creation topics. Chapter 4 was the creation and implementation of the final work, from concept explanations, visual data application, character design, scenario design, to draft development and the procedures of application of visual perception and identify patterns, popular culture and collective memory, and the stage director instruction. Finally, Chapter 5 was the conclusions and self-analysis of the work "The euphoriland", and the recommendations for other illustrators.
