Chopin wrote numerous piano compositions during his life and stood high as the representative of the Romantic music. Nocturne was a major genre for solo piano in the 19th-century Romantic period. The Irish composer, John Field, was the first to create an individual style with it. Chopin was influenced by Field and brought the style of Nocturne to a higher level. Chopin wrote 21 nocturnes from 1827 to 1846. 18 of them were published before he died and No. 19 was published by his followers. Chopin used many skills and musical elements in the nocturnes, showing musical meanings and emotional expressions. Both the display of the pianistic skills and the intensity of the entire music are very rich and grand. The main point of this thesis is to discuss the compositional characteristics of the work, to analyze the musical contents, and to elaborate the interpretative points in performance. Through a deep research, the author aims to explore the meaning and implication in Chopin’s music.
