碩士 === 佛光大學 === 外國語文學系 === 103 === “Cinderella” is a world-famous classic fairy tale, which has been disseminated in a variety of forms across different cultures over time. Among the diverse versions, the famous ones are rewritten by Giambattista Basile, Charles Perrault, and Brothers Grimm. The earliest version of “Cinderella” is “Yeh-hsien,” which made its appearance in the period of Qin-Han in ancient China. American children’s writer Donna Jo Napoli retells the story “Yeh-hsien” in her novel Bound. Serving an introduction, the first chapter of this thesis looks into the differences between Bound and “Yeh-hsien” and discusses the implications behind the differences. It concludes that Bound contains a lot of references to the ancient China culture, but its heroine has a positive woman image, whose behaviors makes reader reflects on the issues of family duty, women’s role and purposes in their lives. The second chapter of this thesis is a Chinese translation of Bound.
