When a horizontal electric field is applied on BPIII cell, the light intensity and response time in different experimental conditions, such as the electric field strength, frequency, cell gap and incident angle of light are measured. In the end of the thesis, we try to propose a possible mechanism to explain the electro-optical property of BPIII. From the experimental results shown in the thesis, we see that the BPIII cell can be a fast response photonic device with high contrast ratio, no residual light intensity at null voltage and less hysteresis effect during operation. According to the behaviors on the light intensity and the induced birefringence with the electric field, Kerr effect can explain experimental results partly.
