The online communication created a new electronic market for business and consumers. Thereby new channels of fundraising, such as crowdfunding, appeared as well. Crowdfunding is considered as a new phenomenon in modern electronic commerce, therefore there are not a lot of accomplished studies about this new way of collecting money by means of crowd; so, the paper attempts to provide fundamental information about crowdfunding. The paper presents a comparison of two crowdfunding platforms: FlyingV in Taiwan and BoomStarter in Russia; that illustrates the development of crowdfunding practice in both countries in general. These websites are of major concern as economic development of both countries is at different levels that can influence the expansion of crowdfunding practices there. The main research method of the paper is case study as it presents the in-depth analysis of cases that can help to conduct better comparison of crowdfunding websites. Moreover, case study approach occurs in a real-life context, so it provides opportunities to find out contemporary tendencies of crowdfunding.
