Interaction between hydrogels and imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs), together with its influence on the physical properties and postsurgical anti-adhesion performance were studied. At first, the volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) of crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel in water in the presence of five imidazolium basedILs was studied. Further, the interfacial properties between aqueous IL and polymer surface were scrutinized with the help of contact angle (CA) measurements. Then, the thermosensitivities of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) based hydrogels (HGs) with NIPAM (P), polyethylene glycol methacrylate (G) and/or acrylic acid (A) segments in terms of volume phase transition temperature (VPTT) were investigated. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and FESEM were employed to elucidate the role of chemical composition of HGs and ILs on VPTT of PNIPAM based HGs in water. Despite the similar mole ratio of hydrophilic segments, PGA has shown higher VPTT than that of PG or PA due to the “synergistic effect”. Finally, biocompatible and biodegradable hydrogel (poly(NIPAAm-acrylic acid)) with thermal responsive property was synthesized and used as postsurgical anti-adhesion barrier. N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) homopolymer is a thermal responsive polymer with a VPTT at around 32 oC. Hydrophilic monomer acrylic acid (AA) was incorporated in the copolymer to elevate the VPTT. N,N’-Methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAA) was used as a crosslinking agent. Effects of AA and MBAA contents on the VPTT and anti-adhesion property were studied. Increasing the AA content will lead to higher VPTT. Increasing the MBAA content will result in stickier hydrogel. The hydrogel exhibited excellent postsurgical anti-adhesion property.
