The number of tankers on shipping routes to the port has increased during the past few decades. These areas support tankers and other ships, which increases the potential for oil spills from ship collisions. This study presents a hydrodynamic model for predicting oil spill trajectories. The combination of oil spill models with Geographic Information System (GIS) supporting software to predict trajectories at various locations of crude oil are critical to remedial measures after an oil spill. Environmental sensitivity index (ESI) map was built from three components of shoreline sensitive ranking, sensitive biological resources, and human-use features. Environmental sensitivity index to account for digital databases and for the abundant biodiversity and coastal geomorphologic features of the shoreline have been generated for the study area. ESIs were classified into the following 10 ESI types: 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 3A, 4, 5, 7, 8B, and 10. The results from the application of the spill analysis models, which were constructed for five scenarios, indicated that an oil spill at Lach Huyen port would affect an extensive area. Environmental sensitivity maps of the shoreline for the Cat Ba ecosystem, which explain how oil spills affect marine environment, were subsequently constructed. The sensitive biological resources were collected and complied from Hai Phong Institute of Oceanography, Marine Fisheries Service and Wildlife Service. Six major categories of biological resources are found in this study: birds, fish, invertebrates, benthic marine habitat, terrestrial plants, and terrestrial mammal. The sensitive of human-use features were collected from Hai Phong Institute of Oceanography, Google map, and Land-use map of Cat Ba Island. Six major categories of human-use features are found in Cat Ba Island included: harbor/ferry, national park, recreational beaches, aquaculture pond, human-use facilities, and nursery ponds for fish and shrimp. Environmental Sensitivity Index from oil spills can help us identify the places’ environmental characteristics such as: environment pollution rescue zone, environment destruction areas; places need to be prevented from polluting activities and places need to preserve their ecosystem. The results of this study can be applied in environmental planning, pollution warning. On the other hand, the results provided a scientific foundation to support for decision making of choosing the investment scenarios. In addition, the results are still the foundation to suggest environmental plans for sustainable development of Cat Ba Island.
