A cross-sectional survey design and convenience sampling method was adopted to examine and compare the influences data on nursing students’ demographic background and characteristics of their practical training experience have on caring behaviors. The study was conducted from January to April 25, 2014, during which research data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of data on nursing students’ demographic background, characteristics of practical training experience and a caring behavior scale. The valid sample size was 408. The respondents of the study comprised the students from the department of nursing at a university of science and technology in central Taiwan and the students from a junior college of nursing in southern Taiwan; all of them have completed their practical training in clinical nursing at medical centers, regional hospitals, district hospitals and specialized hospitals. Investigate the effect of factors affecting nursing students’ caring behaviors, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted to predict important factors that affect nursing students’ overall caring behaviors and the three dimensions of these behaviors. These factors include: importance of showing caring behaviors during practical training; total practice hours; interest in courses on practical nursing training; and school system. The said factors can be used to predict nursing students’ performance in all dimensions of caring behaviors, such as overall caring behaviors, in which 22.4% of the variance can be predicted; maintenance of patients’ rights and interests, in which 21.0% of the variance can be predicted; patents’ needs, in which 23.6% of the variance can be predicted; and the process of helping patients progress through the illness trajectory, in which 16.9% of the variance can be predicted.
