Summary: | 碩士 === 中山醫學大學 === 護理研究所 === 103 === Background/Objective: Schizophrenia is one of chronic mental disorders. Extensive efforts have been dedicated to examining determinants of adaptation of patients with schizophrenia. Little research on family functioning among patients with schizophrenia has been explored, especially in Taiwan. The purposes of this study aimed to examine the correlates of family functioning among Taiwanese individuals with schizophrenia.
Method: A total of 161 individuals with schizophrenia were recruited. Structured questionnaires included (a) patient and family caregiver information sheet, (b) Family Stressors Index and Family Strains Index, and (c) 12-item General Family Functioning Scale of Family Assessment Device. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, t-test and one-way analysis of variance.
Result: Individuals with schizophrenia who were female, older, had longer duration of mental illness, experienced less family life events and pressure, and received community mental healthcare service were more likely to have better family functioning. Female family caregiver and higher family income significantly contributed to better family functioning of patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusion: Understanding influencing factors of family functioning among individuals with schizophrenia is vital to help healthcare providers deliver effective mental healthcare that help the affected individuals achieve healthy family functioning.
