Medication waste is a problem worldwide. It is a burden to national health insurance, not only due to the cost of the drugs being returned, but also due to the cost of disposing of the returned items. Causes of this waste can include excess supply, treatment changes, and patient nonadherence, as well as other reasons. Research has shown that accidental and intentional nonadherence to respiratory medications is common and that this nonadherence, as well as underuse of inhaled corticosteroids and overuse of short-acting b-agonists, consumes significantly more healthcare resources. The most returned medication was acetaminophen, which is not unexpected, given that it is also the most prescribed medication. Many of the most returned drugs were of an as-needed nature, such as analgesics, laxatives, antiemetics, and antidiarrheals. To develop appropriate waste reduction strategies it is first necessary to identify the reasons that these medications are not used in the Taoyuan country setting.
