Summary: | 碩士 === 長榮大學 === 翻譯學系碩士班 === 103 === This research thesis is aimed at investigating three short, humorous stories of Mark Twain: “A Young Boy’s Ambition”, “Luck”, and “The Five Boons of Life”. They are probably the best representatives of humorous works of Mark Twain, which tell the stories of his young, middle, and old age respectively. The first and second stories were published in 1981, and the last one was published in 1977. This paper is categorized into 6 chapters, including an introduction, literature review, comments and analysis on the above-mentioned three stories and their English-to-Chinese translations in chapter 3, 4, and 5, followed by a conclusion in chapter 6. Chapter 2 is dedicated to analyzing Mark Twain’s writings, his life, and translation methods. Comments and analysis on the three short stories are given in Chapter 3 through Chapter 5, mainly discussing about translation techniques including such topics as domestication, foreignization, translating phrases, context, false translation, omission and adaptation. It is hoped that this paper will serve as a useful reference, making contributions for the students from English and translation departments, and readers from other related fields.
