It is necessary for international communication to learn English as the second language. It is well known that the ability of using the English vocabulary decides the performance of learning English. From the viewpoint of vocabulary recitation, phonological awareness is an important step for primary students.
In the learning of the phonological awareness for vocabulary recitation, the purpose of this study is to explore the effects of using English songs on Youtube as teaching material for a set of grade five (G5) students. The teaching session started from the first exam and ended at the second exam. Prior to the seven weeks of the teaching session in English songs on Youtube, the G5 students were firstly tested to determine their ability of phonological awareness. Besides that, an extra test was also conducted to determine the students’ attitude toward English learning. After completing the teaching session in English songs, the G5 students were tested again to determine the learning effects for vocabulary recitation. In the post-test, a questionnaire was conducted to determine their learning opinions on students’ attitude toward learning vocabulary using English songs on Youtube in seven weeks.
In this study, the experimental results in statistic analysis show that the learning of phonological awareness in English songs on Youtube can help the G5 students improve the performance of the vocabulary recitation. Most students have a more positive attitude toward English learning after the seven weeks of the teaching session in English songs. According to the conclusions in improving the vocabulary recitation and phonological awareness of the G5 students, some suggestions are made for the Education department, schools, English teachers, and fellow researchers.
