The purposes of the study are: first, to analyze the problems among pupils in terms of “caring for others” through situational analysis; second, to develop curriculum design for character education on “caring for others” through the use of picture books; third, to explore the implementation process of character education on “caring for others” by using picture books; fourth, to explore the evaluation results of the character education program on “caring for others” by using picture books. According to the above–mentioned purposes, this study attempts to explore the following main problems: First, what are the problems of pupils in terms of “caring for others” ? Second, what are the curriculum designs for character education on “caring for others” in terms of picture books? Third, what are the implementation processes of character education on “caring for others” by using picture books? Fourth, what are the evaluation results of the character education program on “caring for others” through the use of picture books? The conclusions are as follows: First, through situational analysis, it has concluded the lack of good character cognition, attitude and behaviors among pupils in four aspects, namely “caring for self”, “caring for intimate others and associates”, “caring for strangers and distant others” and “caring for animals, plants, and the earth.” Thus implementing the “caring for others” character education is necessary. Second, according to the analysis results, the implementation of the designed series of curriculums for character development on caring for others using picture books that are about caring cognition, caring attitude and caring actions is feasible. Third, this study implements the curriculum through the use of picture books, and conducts teaching adjustment and correction according to situational demands, which is flexible and strategic in implementation. Fourth, implementing the curriculum of character education with picture books has improved the learning efficiency of pupils in caring cognition, attitude and behaviors, and has gained the approval of cooperative teachers, students and parents. Finally, according to the conclusions, suggestions for character education curriculum design and implementation as well as future research are proposed.
