The dielectric barrier discharge is also widely applied in industries and laboratories at atmospheric pressure. In our experiment, we investigates that the plasma vortex in open air is guided by the gas flow. We generate a helium gas vortex and turn it into a plasma vortex by the capacitive coupling and dielectric barrier discharge. The evolutions and travelling behaviours of the gas vortex and the plasma vortex are observed by the Schlieren observation and CCDs. We show that the plasma ring travels with the gas ring, and the plasma ring shows the similar transformation to the gas ring. The measurement of the plasma ring is consistent with the Widnall instability. The vortex stability and plasma-gas interaction are also discussed. The electric characteristic and plasma behaviour are observed by the ICCD with the short exposure. We find that the plasma appears in the form of the corona discharge and then transits to streamer-like discharge when the pd value approaches to the threshold of the streamer discharge.
