This study aims to investigate the impact of joining the WTO on China agricultural industry in the long run. Moreover, we assess the relative agricultural performance of different regions in China based on production efficiency and economic efficiency. This research also examines the relationship between governmental expenditures and agricultural efficiency through graphical analyses. Empirical results reveal that the production efficiency of most areas in China has increased significantly and stably since China joined the WTO. Economic efficiency is higher than production efficiency and has similar trends in different areas. The evidence also shows that the production efficiency of East China is better than the other three economic areas. It is suggested that governmental expenditures have greater influence on agricultural efficiency over high efficiency risk regions than low risk regions.
