The annual output in Taiwan has increased to over 1 million tons, ranking the industry 12th-14th worldwide in terms of production quantity in recent years. However, due to the poor working environment, the foundry industry has been classified as a so-called 3D industry. In addition, the improvements by industry practitioners usually focus on improvements in techniques, such as how to reduce product defect rates and how to increase productivity; less attention is paid to the harm caused by the poor working environment and the physical health of employees. The case company in this study is a giant foundry plant in Taiwan. The company, regarding to the working environment or enhancements in equipment, has already invested large sums. However, the actual working environment is still not good and has considerable room for improvement. This study is expected to summarize the main hazards of the foundry industry toward the environment as a reference for future improvements.
