In general, the performance evaluation for dispatching rules only considers some factors related to time and quantities, such as due dates, average cycle times and utility rate. However, the use of dispatching rules may cause some uncertainties such as the length of waiting lines or the states of resources. These uncertainties may result in management difficulties and thus, they should also be considered while selecting an appropriate dispatching rule. Operational complexity that is based on information entropy is usually used to measure uncertainties of systems. Therefore, in this research, the operational complexity with information entropy is introduced as a performance indicator to evaluate the performance of production systems under different dispatching rules. In addition, a statistical method is used to find out whether there are correlations between operational complexity and other general performances. Accordingly, the information from these correlations can has better understanding the specialties of every dispatching rule and can provide planners with better decision making for selecting dispatching rules.
