IBS patients experienced recurrent abdominal pain and an altered bowel habit along with a range of other features including changes in stool form and frequency, a sensation of incomplete evacuation, and bloating with abdominal distention. Since many patients simultaneously suffer from depression and anxiety, IBS is also considered as a psychological disorder. Antidepressant drugs are usually used as therapeutic drugs; however, no obvious therapeutic effect on abdominal pain and abnormal bowel motility could be observed. Prokinetics drugs and antispasmodics drugs are also used in the treatment of IBS, but strong side effects are found. Probiotics have been proved to harbor therapeutic effects on many diseases without obvious side effects. In this study, we aimed to identify potential probiotic strains for treating IBS. By enemas of TNBS to induce somatic hypersensitivity, we found that Lactobacillus plantarum strain 7036 could ameliorate somatic hypersensitivity exam by von-frey filament test. Moreover, by colorectal distension, we found that two weeks administration of 7036 attenuated visceral hypersensitivity induced by subcutaneous injection of 5-HTP. Our results suggested that two weeks oral administration of L. plantarum 7036 attenuated visceral hypersensitivity through modulating the enteric nerve system.
