Synergistic Effects of Lactobacillus-fermented Herbs on Amelioration of Depressive-like Behavior in Mice

Nowadays, therapy most often used to treat depression is antidepressive medications, but often gives unfavorable side effects. Recently, several studies suggest that microbiota in the gut, especially probiotics, could have antidepression through the gut-brain axis. In addition to probiotics, some herbs also harbor similar effects. In this study, we used probiotics (7036, F3-15.1(1) or MFS3-4) to ferment specified herbal broth prepared from X, Y, or Z and tested whether fermented products show synergestic antidepression effects. We screened for the most effective fermented products and administrated them into male mice to evaluate mice vitality with open-field test (OFT) and forced swimming test (FST). Results showed that X -F3-15.1(1)F gives the best performance in increasing mice vitality. To confirm its synergestic effects, we co-administrated X-F3-15.1(1)F to corticosterone (CORT)-induced depression-like mice to test for improvements in depression behavior with OFT, FST, tail suspension test (TST), and sucrose preference test (SPT). Results showed that X-F3-15.1(1)F significantly improved depression-like behavior induced by CORT, except that of SPT. In conclusion, the results indicated that F3-15.1(1)-fermented X herbal broth has synergistic effects on the amelioration of depression. We hope the results can bring benefits to academia and product development in the future.
