The dormitory building, which previously relied on electric boilers to heat water for residents’ bathing needs, recently installed an air source heat pump system to replace or improve the existing system. The present study involved collection of experimental data regarding the operation of the new system and analysis of the energy saving benefits achieved, to provide a reference for the establishment of similar energy-saving systems in the future. For this engineering case, the total investment was planned not to exceed NT$3 millions, and a target of return was set at NT$1 million per year in energy savings, i.e. the Return on Investment (ROI) was aimed at 33% per year. To achieve these goals, this research examines various issues relating to heat pump system establishment, compatibility with the existing electric boiler system, which type of heat pump system should be selected, the water generation and water delivery model, and cold air recycling, etc. In addition, two kinds of water heating methods are compared where the results show that cycling heating method has higher COP (Coefficient of Performance). After the installation and commencing, the researcher collects operation data with respect to energy saving performance over a period of one year. By comparing with the data of past several years, the results confirm that using the heat pump system has meet the target of providing at least NT$1 million a year in energy savings. Therefore the findings and discussions in this thesis will form a solid reference for the establishment of similar energy-conservation systems in dormitory buildings in the future.
