Therefore, it is important to assess current nurses' knowledge and practice in urinary incontinence care so that nurses can receive adequate training and education. The aim of this study was to explore nurses’ knowledge, attitude, behavior, and the key variables associate with the incontinence care for hospitalized elders. Study design:A cross-sectional design with a stratified random sampling of nurse in a medical center in the central Taiwan was used. A Total of 233 nurses were invited to fulfill a structured questionnaire, including knowledge scale, attitude scale, behavior scale of nursing care for the elderly incontinence and the demography information. Of the 233 questionnaires distributed, 215 questionnaires were completed, giving a 96.4% response rate. Result:Data were analyzed in SPSS version 18.0. P value < .05 was taken as the level of significance. The results showed that: (1) the hospital nurses got 82% correct answers for the knowledge with incontinence, (2) the attitude related to care for the elderly incontinence were generally positive; however, they held that every 2-3 hours to assist the elderly to the toilet increase their workload (73.9%)(3)the most frequently performed nursing assessment behavior was to determine whether the incontinence cause by mobility issues,(4)the most frequently used intervention to resolve the urinary incontinence problem on a frail elderly was the use of incontinence pads, (5) nursing care for the elderly incontinence have a significant positive correlation with nurses’ knowledge and attitudes (r = .158, p <.05); and attitude and behavior also have a significant positive correlation (r = .384, p <.01). Conclusion:The results of this study show a positive relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. Education and experience in the field are associated with the level of knowledge. The level of knowledge of the nurses concerning assessment and treatment of urinary incontinence has a great influence on the implementation of effective incontinence care for elderly. It is clear that nurses need more education and training in urinary incontinence care. The findings from this current study could be used as an impetus for changes in nursing practice.
