The sense of history can not only let us understand the historical background of a heritage, but also help us to connect with it. The sense of history can help us know who we are and where we are from; therefore, it is very important in our daily life. The sense of history has lacked a common definition in literature, history and social science. Although scholars provided various explanations, its contents are still unclear. Nostalgia with similar idea is often mixed with sense of history in tourism study; therefore, the purposes of this study are to define sense of history and identify its contents. In addition, the influence of sense of history on revisit intention is also studied.
Both qualitative and quantitative study techniques were applied in this study. The qualitative study interviewed four people to explore the definition and contents of sense of history, including of historian and tour guides. Then, a questionnaire was designed based on the qualitative study results, and a survey was applied to collect data of respondents’ sense of history and their revisit intention. The quantitative study applied descriptive statistics, factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to explore the influence of the sense of history on revisit intention.
This study defined sense of history as anyone who can get the historical knowledge and historical imagination from a heritage or historical events. Both nostalgia and sense of history can be stimulated by personal experiences with past events; however, people with sense of history not only cherishing their past experiences but also may extending their expectation to the future. In addition, nostalgia is hard to be stimulated in the exotic culture tourism; therefore, the study suggested nostalgia should be a part of sense of history. This study identified four dimensions in sense of history, including historical interest, historical imagination, nostalgia, and historical awareness. In quantitative study, 410 valid questionnaires were collected in Fort San Domingo, and the results indicated sense of history has a significantly positive effect on revisit intention.
According to the results, this study suggests the managers can try to increase tourists’ sense of history, strengthen website’s information, and adjust the guide’s schedules. The results can also help to explore the influences of sense of history on culture authenticity, story marketing, or economic value of a heritage.
