The researcher used self-narrative as a guide to review related data, self talks, free writings, and interviews with related others for collating the researcher’s new illness identity. The correlated events, feelings, relationships with the ones involved, and reflections were thoroughly discussed in this thesis. Also, by working with the team workers and advisor, the researcher reframed and redefined the impact of and the relationship with his new illness identity. The researcher intended to explore the influence and meanings of this adventurous journey. Furthermore, the researcher hoped this thesis could help readers know more about the development of facing the illlness identity, offering a reference for patients, the members of support group, counseling professions, and social workers.
Last but not least, the researcher categorized different phases of the new illness identity in accordance with the idea of “Grand Tour,” which corresponded to Carol S. Pearson’s “The Hero Within: Six Archetypes We Live By.” The journey of facing different phases can be nonlinear. The researcher re-experienced different archetypes over and over again. Sometimes, the researcher synchronized with various archetypes all together. Six archetypes could be contradictory to one another, but eventually they all completed each other, helping the researcher weather the storm along the way. All of the six archetypes were part of the researcher; they were indivisible and everlasting. Indeed, the six archetypes were actually the abilities grown out of the researcher when I was confronted with the new illness identity.
