The meaning of documentary had changed from delivering obscure knowledge, culture reappearance and caring the underpriviledged minority to getting close to the main stream. However, it’s still difficult for the movies in niche market to struggle between western commercial movies and rising domestic movies. The government now should support all types of movies so that they can survive in the market. “Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development” argued that the government should support and promote domestic movies in order to stimulate movie consumption, expecting to have an outstanding performance at the box office year by year. According to the above argument, this study focuses on the performance of documentary with government subsidy in recent ten years (2004-2013). This study finds out that there is a gap between the box office of documentary with subsidy and the original anticipation, which means that government’s subsidy policy for documentary doesn’t present an obvious positive relation, and thus we should further inspect and improve the policy. The second question in the study focuses on three aspects. Firstly, regarding government, when the box office of documentary with subsidy doesn’t perform well, government will take some actions on the subsidy distribution to meet the future expectation. Secondly, regarding the industry, what are their anticipation and suggestions on future policy? Lastly, regarding scholars, the study discusses the possible reason for the insignificant performance of subsidy and provides suggestion for the documentary market with the advice from the field of industry and university.
