Through an image, the designer conveys a design philosophy and related information to viewers. However, as the product photographer is the one who takes the operational shots, design communication can undermine the resulting product image due to differences in expertise and focus between the two parties. The goal of this study is to discuss the optimal design communication framework and model for the field of product photography. First, we discuss related documentation to determine that “an effective communication” model requires “bidirectional” mechanisms. The designer must be able to actualize abstract design concepts through graphics because graphics like sketches and renderings produced in the design process act as a primary medium and reference for design personnel during design communications. When engaged in such communications, it is easier to reach a consensus when product design information is presented in a systematic and sequential manner. In addition, “design theory” showcases the thought process of the designer throughout the product design process. This study examines the aforementioned documentation to integrate “an effective communication” framework and “design theory” that highlights product design content. It then suggests a design communication framework and “method for design communication framework” and transmission of product information. Thereafter, five design experts were invited to undertake in three rounds of Delphi Method questionnaires to collect data on the current design communication situation and make suggestions on product photography. This study amended the “method for design communication framework” according to the outcome of the questionnaire. As a result, designers will be able to utilize the results of this study to better convey product image needs and design information to photographers, further increasing the efficiency of product photography while achieving the expected image results.
