As-signing the right person to the right position and task not only allows employees to maximize their potentials, it also improves organizational performance. This study aims to understand the relations between adaptability and achievement motivation on employee retention through a survey. Respondents were from a governmental agency. Two hundred and ninety-five questionnaires were distributed, and the valid return rate was 73.7%. Results showed that there was a significant positive correlation between adaptability and employee re-tention; there was a significant positive correlation between achievement motivation and employee retention; there was a significant positive correlation between adaptabil-ity and achievement motivation. In addition, the impact of some demographic factors on adaptability, achievement motivation, and employee retention would reach signifi-cant difference. Achievement motivation has a partly mediating effect on the positive correlation between adaptability and employee retention.
