Glares and inappropriate illuminations should be minimized to provide better environment for treatments and rehabilitations. Previous researches on the field are limited domestically, relative standards and regulations have not yet been established, causing the importance of lighting quality has been ignored and poor lighting quality in the wards everywhere due to the improper design. The thesis is devoted to set up a new algorithm for evaluating lighting environments with a reasonable performance index of 60. The scores for a better lighting environment should be at least 70 for the wards and 70.8 for the corridors. To verify the suggestions, we used lighting design software DIALux to build up a ward in order to analyze the design performances and the graphic monitoring software Labview to simulate the lighting control system and verify its application practicality. First, we evaluated the lighting qualities of different luminaries and selected the better one which meets for the lighting environment need. Then, we changed the arrangements with different mounting height and spacing of the luminaires, shielding angle of louvers, meanwhile the small power LEDs light sources are used for further improvements on overall lighting qualities. The result showed that the performance index can be raised from 78.2 to 82.1 for a four-bed ward and 75.2 to 84.0 in a two-bed ward, while that of the corridor improved from 65.9 to 72.4. From the simulation results, the proposed algorithm is practical and valuable for improving overall lighting quality of hospital wards, and be suitable guidance for advanced smart lighting control researches.
