The biggest challenge for mobile operators today is to strike a balance between 3 key important business objectives – One, fulfilling the demands of their customers for better telecommunication services and quality; Two, managing the costs of investment, in attaining such goals, within a sustainable level; and Three, at the same time, continue to expand their market share and penetration. This research report analyzes one key aspects of the business objective in managing the costs of infrastructure investments and keeping it within a sustainable level. The report mainly focuses on one of the major cost items of telecommunication infrastructure investments – the backhaul communications network. It analyses the technology involved, pros and cons associated with each technological investment options, and in parallel, taking into context of the current and future market developments in Taiwan when considering various investment decisions. By studying and categorizing the backhaul solutions into several research areas including “Self-built Network”, “FTTX”, “LLU”, DOCSIS”, “Microwave” and “Femtocell”, this research report provides an anlaysis of each solution option from the perspective of government regulations; investment costs; operational complexity; any additional value add that the solution option brings; and the realistic time factor to consider when implementing each option. This report also presents a comprehensive analysis of each investment options by keeping the following factors in perspective – existing infrastructure; developments between network operators and major asset owners (e.g. building landlords); investment climate; resource conditions; and various business development strategies in Taiwan.
