According to the analysis of population projections for Taiwan: 2012~2060, the elderly population in Taiwan expects to reach 20% in the year of 2025, the number will become even higher in 2060 which is 40%. Thus, building a suitable environment for the senior citizens and making a society age-friendly is indispensable.
Museum is a non-profit public space which has multifaceted functions to become an ideal lifelong learning and leisure area for elderly. However, most of the research regarding to museum’s visitors is based on the common satisfaction questionnaire or visitors statistics. The former studies do not demonstrate the most important factors of museum services which are strongly related and significant for elderly visitors.
In order to meet the needs of the elderly, this study investigates the priority needs of museum service for elderly visitors. The research has used mixed methods, including in-depth interviews and a quantitative questionnaire survey, in a two-phase study; in addition, conjoint analysis was utilized to analyze the collected data.
Six conjoint attributes of museum services were selected: text size; seating area; personal connection to main themes and objects; guided tour; sufficient and clean toilets. The results shows that the priority needs in services for elderly visitors are personal connection to main themes and objects, and seating area. Based on this result, the potential for promoting museum services for the elderly population in Taiwan is discussed.
