This thesis attempts to analyze Miller’s three plays in the Semiotics point. And have focused on how Arthur Miller wrote the social ideology in response to the social problems. The three plays including “All My Sons, 1947”, “The Crucible, 1953” and “A View from the Bridge, 1955”. The study draws on Roland Barthes’s interpretations of semiotic to analyze the play from few questions: what kind of social consciousness symbols are there in Miller’s three plays? How does these social consciousness symbols flash back to Miller’s life history? And then discuss the meaning of the social ideology in Miller’s plays. There are five parts in this thesis. In Chapter One, the study are going to introduce the way of study. Chapter Two will discuss the research of Arthur Miller and Semiotics theory. In Chapter Three, Using the dialogue and the scene action to discuss the social consciousness between the playwright’s life history and three plays. In Chapter four, concentrates on analyzing the ideology of the three plays by Semiotics view. And the last chapter is the conclusion. As a matter of fact, Arthur Miller as a social problem playwright, who still cannot avoid to have his own ideology position. However, Miller show his social consciousness in the plays.
