My thesis is a study of the art of seal knob, through collection, categorization, and creation. The focal point of the study is a historical survey of still seal knob, circular sculpture, and relief. Under the guidance of teachers and friends, my study is also a review of my creative process. Materials used in making seal knob vary greatly. Different materials, such as tooth, crystal, jade, bronze, wood, porters, and stone, could result in varying degree of exquisiteness. My study concentrates on stone carving. Owing to the fact that stone cracks easily, creation is limited to imitation, embezzlement, and nature painting. The shape of imitation is even subject to different patterns of cracks; therefore, creation must be done accordingly. I personally think that sculpture can crystallize into philosophy, while philosophy so sublime can transform into art. It is true of seal knob: sometimes delicate, elegant, classic, and in general, artistic. The creation of seal knob will be refined in form and content by the elements of calligraphy and painting. Since the fourteenth century, seal knob is closely linked with calligraphy, painting, and life. My thesis is a study of the art of seal knob, through collection, categorization, and creation.
The focal point of the study is a historical survey of still seal knob, circular sculpture, and relief. Under the guidance of teachers and friends, my study is also a review of my creative process.
Materials used in making seal knob vary greatly. Different materials, such as tooth, crystal, jade, bronze, wood, porters, and stone, could result in varying degree of exquisiteness.
