Expats, those wander among metropolitans as if the urban nomads, including high-skilled international migration, the advantageous bunch who enjoy Western cultural domination; and the overseas migrant workers, the disadvantageous Southeast Asian blue-collared social group. The settlements of those inhabitants shape not only entirely different urban space patterns, reflecting the diversified dwelling characteristic of post-colonial urban city, but also indirectly influence the urban development of Taipei. In recent years, there is a growing importance in the study on the clustering of immigrants in Taipei, yet there has been any comparison study on the foreign communities of Western and Southeast Asian ethnic origins. Thus, this study is developed on the concept of “Deleuze: Normadology”, and comprehensively ponders the areas where foreigners gathers in Taipei. Based on the spatial scale of research, this study begins with observing the structures and differentiations of ethnic gathering spaces in areas surrounding TienMu-YangmingShan, Xinyi District, Taipei Main Station, ChunShan and Muzha, and concludes with the focus of the main thesis, comparing the superior and inferior ethnic groups’ gathering spaces and their uniqueness among the urban districts. The power asymmetries and the difference in dwelling characteristics between Westerners and blue-collared migrant workers influence the urban service facilities, price for real estate rents, utilization of the public squares, and the construction of urban landscapes. This also vastly influences the movements and settlements of the urban space. As the foreign strangers rove about as nomads or settle down temporarily, it is possible to observe the abilities of different ethnic groups in places of residence and activities, sense of community bonding, and their longing of home in a foreign environment. With the wheel of time turns, the overlapping and mixture of the ethnic gathering spaces reveal the cross-cultural blending and fusion within a modernized metropolitan.
