An energy management system is a device that collects and monitors energy usage data. It is hoped that, by feeding real-time information and providing a means to manage energy consumption, consumers can incorporate energy saving into their daily life and ultimately save money. Most studies focuses on exploring the motivations and barriers for adoption of the system. This suggests that because benefits of energy management systems are apparent, its users are assumed to voluntarily continue utilizing the system to its full advantage. Yet surprisingly little research is found to investigate consumers’ real behavior and whether they continue to use it. This study aims to contribute to this gap by studying the real case of Haiwai Elementary School (pseudonym). Haiwai constructed a Zero Carbon Classroom (ZCC) equipped with an energy management system in 2012. Haiwai has always been keen on environmental education and occupies one of the best positions in this field in Taiwan. After fully informed the benefits and functions of ZCC, it was expected that ZCC would allow both students and staffs to better incorporate smart energy saving into their daily school life. Nevertheless by the end of 2012, ZCC was loathed and the school struggled whether continue using it or not. Case study method is adopted in this research. Over year 2013, the authors interviewed both students and staffs and tracked changes in their perception, attitudes and usage of ZCC. The purpose is to explore underlying factors which determines their attitude and usage change. The Expectation-Disconfirmation Theory is synthesized as an analytical framework which may provide critical insights for this case. The theory is used to examine customer satisfaction, which is determined by product expectations, perceived performance and disconfirmation. Disconfirmation refers to the difference between expectation and perceived performance which has direct impact on satisfaction. It is hoped that the example of ZCC in Haiwai Elementary School could provide both practitioners and scholars a better understanding of consumers’ usage of energy management system.
