Ninety-two 5th graders with similar initial English listening proficiency in Taipei City participated in this study, 48 of whom served as the experimental group and 44 as the control group. The former received the provision of background knowledge prior to watching English video clips and the latter only watched English video clips without receiving any background knowledge, lasting for ten weeks. Data required were collected through pre- and post-listening comprehension tests and feedback questionnaire toward the provision of background knowledge, and were analyzed through statistic analysis of within-group and between-group comparisons of both groups’ performance in the listening comprehension tests and their reactions expressed in the questionnaires. The research results show that after the experimental study, both groups’ listening comprehension ability significantly improved respectively and also provided positive feedback toward the instruction with video clips; however the improvement of between groups did not reach significant level.
