There are many journal essays and dissertations on Huang’s works. However, most essays and dissertations focus on his lifetime and his contribution to new Taiwan literature history. Huang’s research about Taiwanese ballads and customs get less attention. This thesis is based on previous research, using literature analysis to comprehend Huang’s contribution to Taiwanese ballads and customs.
This thesis is divided into five parts to discuss Huang Deshi’s research in Taiwanese ballads and customs. The five parts are Taiwanese ballads, glove puppet, traditional religion, Confucianism, and local chronicles. In the research of Taiwanese ballads, Huang constructed the history of Taiwanese ballads from Qing Dynasty and Japanese colonial period. He analyzed the format, content, and other research results of these ballads enthusiastically in 1950-1960. In the research of glove puppets, Huang was the pioneering researcher of Taiwanese puppet show. He proposed the view of Taiwanese glove puppet show and the recreation in Japanization period, in order to maintain the glove puppet culture in Taiwan. In the research of traditional religion, he contributed to collecting and studying Taiwanese customs. In the research of Confucianism, he elaborated what Confucianism is, and edited Confucian Temple in Taiwan. In the research of local chronicles, Huang was familiar with the history and the documents of Taipei. He attended the editorial board of Taipei chronicles. This thesis would like to point out that Huang Deshi is not only the pioneer scholar in Taiwan literature history research, but also plays an important role in researching and preserving Taiwan history.
