His style of piano works was unique. The characteristics of the six Moment Musical that Schubert composed were improvisatory and short. Each piece is unique that displays rich emotion and musical performance. They are considered the masterpieces of piano pieces in early nineteenth century. This thesis contains six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,explaining the author′s intent and motivation in analyzing the music structure and performace interpretation of Moment Musical(D.780),as well as the scope of this thesis and the methodology used. Chapter 2 states Schubert′s biography, music works and an overview of Schubert′s piano works. Chapter 3 is an analysis of Moment Musical( D.780) through music phrase structure, harmonic progression and tonality, rhythmic patterns, and melodic lines and textures. Chapter 4 describes the possible performance interpretations of Moment Musical D.780. It is a collection of techniques found from piano lessons, literature review concerning performances, and the author′s personal performance experiences. Chapter 5 is a comparative analysis of the recordings rendered by Bredel, Shiff, and Arrua.The fundamental structure of this chapter is constructed based on the different interpretations by these three important masters and the author′s personal assessment. Chapter 6 concludes author′s research and personal performance experiences of this work.It is hoped that this thesis can provides the interpretive reference to people who are interested in Schubert ′s piano works.
