Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(1749-1832) was a great writer in the same era. Goethe’s poetry was full of diversity and emotionally sincere. His poetry often became an inspirational source for many composers. The theme of this thesis is based on four Schubert’s German Lieder in which Goethe’s poems were used. By analyzing the melody, form, structure and poetic rhythm of the four Lieder, the unity of Schubert’s music and Goethe’s poetry will be discussed. This thesis contains five chapters. Chapter 1 is to state the purpose and extent of this study. Chapter 2 introduces the life of Schubert and the characteristics of his Lieder. Chapter 3 discusses the life and composition features of Goethe. Chapter 4 states the analysis and performance interpretation of four Lieder, which include “Rastlose Liebe” (D. 138), “Liebe schwärmt auf allen Wegen (D. 239 No. 6), “Heidenröslein” (D. 257), and “Geheimes” (D. 719). Finally, Chapter 5 concludes this research. Hopefully, readers will be able to gain a better understanding of these four Lieder by Schubert from the analysis and interpretation of this research. This thesis may also provide singers who might perform these Lieder a good source of reference in the future.
